Then 10 to 15 years ago the company started trading nickel and cobalt, which is today, a very well-established business. When we started cobalt demand was predominantly for portable electronic batteries and this is when we got involved in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We built a strong presence in the Chinese battery market and accompanied our customers to transition into the EV battery supply chain which also required nickel. We then started expanding into other regions globally and further downstream into the OEM auto sector who realised that in order to reach their production targets they needed to pay more attention to their whole supply chain. It wasn’t enough to just order batteries from their suppliers, they actually needed to make sure that the whole chain had what was required to make those batteries in terms of critical raw materials, but also to control the various ESG metrics of the metal units contained in these batteries. In fact this bottleneck is equally relevant for the whole EV supply chain, as one lithium unit missing from the system is roughly equivalent to one unit of nickel demand destroyed. So if the lithium market is short and cannot meet demand requirements, it just means that the equivalent nickel units will either be stored or not produced at all. We have relationships with over 140 banks and the total size of our credit lines is above $73 billion. There’s always a physical objective attached to what we do. Our investments are likely to be minority stakes, but large enough to really show that we are there for the long run and that we have skin in the game. We have a huge logistics network, a large financing capacity, and the possibility to invest equity when it’s appropriate. Now EV demand from the rest of the world is starting to catch up so it is natural that investment will come from a wider range of sources. And as governments realise how strategic these metals are, they are introducing incentives to ensure industries in their jurisdictions are able to access the required resources. I wondered how you’re looking at things. On the contrary. Firstly, the production cost of those units is much higher [than carbonate from brine or spodumene]. All these mines are low grade and also more expensive to recover. We estimate that the Chinese lepidolite production requires lithium hydroxide prices above $30,000 a tonne, whereas any Australian mine would be doing okay at $20,000.
