Benchmark Mineral Intelligence is pleased to announce the launch of its new Rare Earths ESG Report, which will bring further clarity to the environmental, social and governance landscape of the rare earths industry.
The launch of Benchmark’s Rare Earths ESG Report enables miners and refiners to benchmark their ESG performance against peers, as well as allowing companies to evaluate their own sustainability performance. For downstream players and investors, the Rare Earths ESG Report acts as a responsible sourcing and ESG investment screening tool.
Amongst other features of the report, a key component is Benchmark’s Rare Earths Sustainability Index, which measures the transparency and performance of >60 rare earths mining and refining companies across the globe on a company-by-company basis.
Benchmark’s Sustainability Index evaluates the sustainability disclosures of companies across 79 environmental, social and governance indicators. Scores awarded to companies lead to classification into one of four categories: Industry Leading, Good Practice, Moderate Visibility, and Limited Visibility.
Other components of the report include quarterly updates on major ESG trends within the industry, news and policy briefings, discussion of key materiality topics and a global Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) assessing the current dominant rare earths production route.
Sarah Colbourn, Acting Head of Sustainability, said:“With rare earths set to play such a pivotal role in energy transition supply chains we are delighted to launch an ESG report designed to support the industry by providing a data-driven assessment of ESG performance across the mining and refining space.”
“This builds on Benchmark’s extensive offering in the sustainability space, adding to our range of ESG reports for battery materials”, she said.
“The expansion of Benchmark’s rare earth coverage with the addition of the ESG Report comes at a crucial time for the industry, and will play a critical role in helping the supply chain meet increasingly stringent demands from downstream players,” Daan de Jonge, Product Director – Critical Minerals and Multi-Commodity, said.
