The battery energy stationary storage (BESS) market has grown significantly over the last five years, with this growth is set to continue. Benchmark’s BESS database has now surpassed 10,000 unique projects, both operating and in the pipeline.
This is nearly nine times the number of projects Benchmark tracked in the May 2022 edition of Benchmark's BESS database. The average size of the projects in the database has increased significantly, too, from 193MWh in 2022 to 316MWh today.
“BESS has matured at a dramatic pace over the last five years from a relatively niche technology to the go-to source of much needed flexibility on today's grids,” said Pete Tillotson, a BESS research analyst at Benchmark. “Technological innovation, falling battery costs, intense OEM competition for market share, and the increasing realisation of its multiple benefits and speed of deployment have all contributed to BESS becoming core grid infrastructure.”

How has the BESS market changed over the past five years?
The BESS market has grown significantly over the last five years, with a~15-times increase in annual grid-scale installations 2021 and 2025. The average size of the projects installed since 2021 has also been increasing. The average grid-scale project in 2025 was 261MWh compared to 68MWh in 2021.
